Michael Cully is a C-Level international business executive with expertise in implementing new business strategies from the ground up for organizations ranging from startups to large multinational companies. He has expertise in global business development, brand strategy, distribution channel development, corporate sustainability, government/public affairs, and corporate development. Michael has had repeated success in building multinational teams, establishing distribution networks across multiple regions, and launching new products, growing businesses profitably worldwide.
Michael is currently CEO and co-founder of Susterre, a Canadian-based startup focused on commercializing technologies that utilize high pressure fluid jets for in-field agricultural applications.
Prior to Susterre, Michael served as the Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Growers, a startup focused on software and data analytics in the ag sector. Growers was successfully sold to a multinational corporation in 2020. Prior to Growers, Michael held positions with JCB, AGCO Corporation, the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and Andersen Consulting. Michael has lived and worked in Belarus and Ukraine and is fluent in the Russian language.
Michael has a M.A. from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a B.A. from Princeton University.
Martin is an experienced venture investor, with direct involvement and responsibility across the continuum from deal origination through due diligence, negotiating terms, and portfolio management and on to exit. With Carrot Ventures, this now includes forming new companies which the fund then finances.
Martin serves/d as a Director or advisor to several AVAC investments including BlackSquare, Business Infusions, Circle Cardiovascular Imaging, Decisive Farming, Leankor, LoginRadius, Radient Technologies, samdesk, Susterre, and Wedge Networks, and is a Partner of Accelerate Fund I, L.P.
Prior to AVAC Group, Martin held positions in several technology companies across multiple industries, including Acceleware, Hemisphere GPS, Nortel, Novatel Wireless and Aliant Communications.
Martin earned an MBA from the University of Calgary and a B.Eng from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Martin is an avid mountain biker, and supplements this with skiing, running, and time with family and friends.
With over 14 years as a venture investor at AVAC Group, Jim has developed great experience building and investing in digital, life science and agricultural technology companies. He has been responsible for leading venture capital investment transactions ranging from deal origination, investment-grade financial, commercial, technical, and legal due diligence, developing investment theses, negotiating term sheets, presenting investment recommendations, monitoring portfolio companies, and extracting portfolio value. He had a foundational role in developing the investment processes and operational structure of the Carrot investment model.
Prior to AVAC, Jim was an entrepreneur focused on commercializing biotechnology for animal and human health applications. Jim had a productive career as a faculty member at the University of Calgary publishing and patenting extensively in the areas of animal and human health with a focus on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and nutrient absorption.
Jim earned a PhD and a BSc from the University of Calgary. He is an enthusiastic swimmer and enjoys spending time with his family at their Calgary home.
